NEXT UP!! THE BLOOMFIELDS
In book one we learned how Harris actions contributed to a lot of heartbreak and dysfunction. Now read about Harris acknowledging his faults, gaining self-awareness and growing into the man that will be a better father, husband and businessman.
After tossing the gun into the lake, Bennie, Byrd, and Cassandra headed to drop Byrd off at his house.
“You good, sis?” questioned Bennie, looking in the rearview mirror at Cassandra.
She was staring out the window. She looked up, making eye contact in the mirror. She then briefly nodded before returning her gaze outside the window.
All she could think about was Kevin’s words before she killed him. It was his truth; he did not love her. So, she reacted on emotion. Now that Kevin was dead, the small hope she held in her heart that he would be with her at the end was now a void. Now she was consumed with pain and life did not seem to have any quality. She needed to numb herself for a moment so she would not do anything else stupid. When Bennie stopped at the next red light, she hurried out the car and dashed down the street.
“Fuck!” yelled Bennie, putting the car in park.
He jumped out and began chasing his sister. But just like when they were children, he could never catch her. After running for two blocks, Bennie had to stop to catch his breath. Byrd drove down the block and eased alongside of him rolling the window down.
“Come on, cuz, I will get my people on it. We will find her.”
Bennie continued to watch his sister run until she was out of his view before getting inside the car.
At May’s house, Harris laid in bed staring at the ceiling fan turn slowly while thinking about everything. It felt like the world was crashing down on him and he did not know the first thing to do. He thought about calling Tameka to vent but he decided to wait until he got back home. Harris thought about some of the coping strategies his therapist taught him. He got out of bed and went down to the living room, turned-on meditation music, lit a palo santos before lighting his blunt. After taking a seat on the rug in front of the fireplace he closed his eyes and began thinking about his children. The images of each of them and the funny times made him smile. After several minutes, he could feel his stress decreasing. He inhaled and exhaled once more before opening his eyes.
Feeling much calmer, he continued smoking as he watched the flames in the fireplace. It was 4:00am and he wondered if Rayvin was awake, so he texted her, I love you.
The front door opened, and Bennie entered. When Harris looked at his uncle, he could see the stress on his face.
“Where is my mother?” Harris questioned.
Bennie snatched the weed out of his hand before responding, “Probably somewhere smoking crack. She hopped out the car and made a run for it after we tossed the gun in the lake.”
“Damn, another problem,” said Harris, shaking his head.
“Shit, that’s all your meditating ass have to say. I warned you not to open pandora’s box. Now my sister running around here tripping. Back in the day when she got like this, I had my sister and mother to help with her. But now it’s just me and her and I don’t know how this is going to go,” spoke Bennie.
“What you mean! I am here and I can help you with her now,” responded Harris, feeling offended.
“Nephew, if you had your mother’s best interest, you would have taken my warning serious and not confronted her on the phone at the airport. She didn’t need to know you were coming here to meet with your father. Talking about simmering retribution! I know this is my karma for giving him that crack back in the day,” said Bennie.
“I will drive around and see if I can find her,” said Harris, standing up from the rug and going upstairs. He got dressed and grabbed his gun and keys before leaving Bennie who had fallen asleep on the couch.
Harris spent the next three hours driving around all the spots he knew crackheads hung out. When he could not find his mother anywhere, he gave up and went back to May’s house to get a couple hours of sleep.
